A workshop will be held on Saturday 25 July to introduce lidar (light detection and ranging) as a source of data for archaeological feature detection. The workshop will use lidar for the area around Bilsdale in North Yorkshire, which is associated with Rievaulx Abbey.
The workshop will be delivered by staff from the Aerial Investigation and Mapping, Remote Sensing, Heritage Protection Department of Historic England.
The event is intended as an introduction to lidar for archaeology, so no previous experience is required. Basic computer skills will be required for the analysis and recording stage which this workshop will equip people to carry out afterwards. Attendance at the workshop will not constitute a firm commitment to volunteer for the project, but there are a limited number of places available and volunteer interest is likely to be high.
All materials will be provided at the workshop, as well as tea and coffee. The workshop will run for approximately 4 hours, plus a break for lunch. No food will be provided, but Stokesley is a market town with several places to buy lunch.
The workshop will be held in the Stokesley room in the ground floor of Stokesley Town Hall. Parking is available nearby, see

Places at the workshop cost £25. To book, visit the EventBrite page
