West Riding (South)

The West Riding became a centre of industrial activity by Rievaulx, especially iron-working. Land near Wakefield and Barnsley was given to the abbey between around 1145 – 1160, in Shitlington, Flockton and Stainborough. Forges on the banks of the River Dove are mentioned, and a monopoly of all the iron of a vill and wood for charcoal. Faweather in Rombalds Moor in Bingley parish was given between 1150-1160, along with dead wood and minerals in the vills of Halton (Bingley), Shipley, Heaton and Chellow (Bradford). Harden became an iron-working centre, with further grants  of dead wood and mineral working in the 13th century.
