Pickering Vale East and Coast

Rievaulx’s interests in the East of Pickering Vale and the coastal zone seems to have begun with a grant of the grange of Hunmanby near Filey by Gilbert de Gant to Ailred, by 1157. The abbey was later given land at Willerby near Scarborough (between 1167-88). It then gave much of this latter gift to the canons of Bridlington, keeping only 3 1/2 acres for itself.
